The team excavated the area around the well pit and offset pipe. It was discovered that the well was encased in rocks and cement, which left the technicians with almost no room to perform the task at hand. After some digging and heavy lifting they were able to clear the area and proceed with the casing extension. The well pump, wire, and piping were pulled out of the well. The metal well casing is fitted with a water-tight coupling used to attach an extension, raising the well above ground level. The well is then disinfected and flushed. New wiring from the well to the house was pulled through the conduit and electrically tied into the existing system. A new watertight well cap and electrical conduit to raise the wiring were installed. The pit was then abandoned and filled with soil.

A follow-up bacteria test showed that the water was now coliform-free and safe for consumption!

This well was located inside a pit that is very susceptible to groundwater, drainage, insects, and animals. The homeowner had continual issues with coliform bacteria in her water causing gastrointestinal illness. On top of that, the customer's elderly mother was moving into her home making it a necessity for safe, potable water immediately.

Eastern Water has generated cost savings for our customers in our variable speed, constant pressure system designs. They save money on material, electrical costs, and maintenance, in addition, to the protection of electrical components. By calculating the water demand we carefully select the best size pumps and drives. From there we can install, to the existing plumbing and power supply, a system that assures great service and protection. With variable speed, there are no hard starts that increase peak electrical demand. Depending on the demand the pump rarely operates at maximum frequency which also increases the longevity of the pump and reduces the electrical draw.

The replacement of this antiquated and failing booster system needed unique specifications that met the needs of the space and demand of the water system. The booster system originally installed was a "skid package." These are stand-alone structures that have booster pumps with the associated piping already assembled. The space here shows that the skid package was put in place prior to the tanks. A new system had to be designed and built piece by piece.

This case is regarding a well inside a pit that is very susceptible to groundwater, drainage, insects, and animals. Likely effects to the drinking water will be bacteria, nitrates or nitrites, volatile organic chemicals, and other types of substances harmful to public health. This condition has become a state requirement and is remedied by raising the top of the well above ground level.
